The Bone of Contention

My partner went grocery shopping the other day and picked me up a few things I needed as well. Among my goodies was this big fat steak with a bone - a bone perfect for my 14-year-old dog - as was her intention. So, I cut away the meat, air fried the bone, let it cool then put it out for him. He was in ecstasy! Wasn’t long before he had it stuffed under the tv table though, scrambling madly to get at it. So, remembering how utterly possessive he is with his food, I crouched beside him for a few moments, just petting his head to calm the snarling but he then growled fiercely and tried to bite me. Recalling what a dog trainer told me decades ago, I tapped my index finger on his nose and went to drag out the bone… but he got downright nasty, really biting me on my hand! This loving pup is a rescue dog with only a few remaining teeth (from abuse) so no damage done. Screw that I thought though, and I just let him pace (and pace and pace) trying to figure out this bone-extraction thing on his own. Afterall, I’m only human. This lasted for about an hour until I felt sorry enough for him to get the broom to dig out his prize. He was now back in Doggie Nirvana, and all was well in the world. Well, not really…

I went to bed and he dragged that bone to the foot of his bed in my bedroom, hung his head and shoulders over it, gripping the bone in his jaw, then releasing it onto the hardwood floor, making all kinds of noise… for three tortuous hours! I was then wide awake by midnight to begin what became a very long day. He slept ’til noon and loved on his bone the remainder of the day. Read more

Making of “Melissa’s Lunch Money”

In the fall of 2006, a professional photographer and a large group of actors from Hollywood gathered to give the world, and in particular, the humanitarian organization, 10 Million Clicks For Peace, a helping hand. They went on a photo shoot to bring to life the story of a young girl who desperately wanted to also give the world a helping hand. The storyboard was written by 10MC co-founders, Julian Kalmar and Rick Beneteau, and the next day the principles gathered and recorded the voices in an Oscar/Grammy award winning studio Los Angeles studio. If the narrator’s voice sounds familiar it is Mike Dunahee, the “King of Beers” voice in Budweiser commercials, and the voice of Melissa, Shawnna Youngquist, is the one you hear in Mazda commercials saying, “Zoom Zoom.”

Here, in the words of 10 Million Clicks For Peace co-founder, Julian Kalmar, is how everything went down… Read more

My Brother Jack Part 3

A day after I wrote Part 2, my partner and I went ‘Jackspotting’ for the third time that week. It was Friday and we scoured the boundaries we had determined to be his zone of operation. At the last stop, one of the two markets he frequents, we saw his cart parked outside. So we head in and scour the entire ground floor, but no Jack. On our way out, she asks if we should take the escalator to the second floor where washrooms are located and being she doesn’t like riding them said she’d wait in the lobby. A few seconds pass and Jack and I are riding down together. We had forgotten the sleeping bag kit this time so she asked me if I wanted her to go back to my apartment to get it. Of course, yes.
Jack was more communicative than ever while I waited for her to return. I finally got an answer as to where he sleeps - the bank down the street in the ATM vestibule - coincidentally where my drycleaning business used to bank. He commented that people come in throughout the night. But he said it was warm in there. And this made me warm. Read more

Rick Beneteau, 10MC co-founder, is back at it again with his long-time music friend, Larry Thompson. They wrote this song nearly 30 years ago and revamped it recently and decided to put this video together because, well, everyone needs a little inspiration every now and then. I often find Jack waiting outside my building (my fellow tenants inform me he is there) and I can only assume he wants a little company. So, as tradition is starting to have it, I offer him a muffin which he still declines if he is not hungry. If he accepts one he continues to want to pay me for it.

I recently commented that I really liked his shoes. They appeared to be newer as they were in great shape. He smiled widely. Perhaps they were a lucky find but I was hoping he had had a successful few days collecting and re-selling copper in order to buy them. Read more

My Brother Jack

He’s turning 60 but his weathered face and stooped stature would lead one to believe he is much older. I first heard about Jack when I moved into an apartment in the trendy Victorian part of town. He had just gotten out of the hospital after some teenagers had severally beaten this homeless man. Soon after, my companion and I went shopping and I noticed a big bundle of thick socks made it’s way into our cart. I was quick to tell her that those were not the kind of socks I wore. She retorted, “they’re not for you.” Earlier in the day I had told her about this incident and she took it upon herself to call one of the homeless centers and inquire as to what homeless souls needed most. It was winter and without hesitation she was told, socks. So, I asked the tenants on my floor to knock at my door should Jack pass by our building and the socks were at-the-ready on the couch near my door. A few days later I was told he was outside but it wasn’t Jack but rather a tall younger man out there. He received the socks.

Later that day my oldest grandson came to visit his ‘Papa’. I recounted the sock story and he, always the comedian, said “Watch, that man will go back downtown tonight and tell all his buddies and tomorrow you will have a parade of homeless people and their carts lined up outside waiting for socks!” Read more

New Year | New Song

10MC co-founder, Rick Beneteau, made his living writing and producing songs some 25 years ago until the ramifications of divorce usurped his music career. He then came to the then brand new Internet and became a pioneer of e-marketing before taking a more spiritual direction in the early 2000’s. Although removed from the music business all these years he managed to keep writing lyrics and recently teamed up with his foremost songwriting partner back in the day, Larry Thompson, to write and produce a song that we feel will resonate deeply with you and yours.

Have a listen to A Song to Change the World and share with all those you feel will resonate with the message. Read more

The Ungiven Gift (from the founders)

He was pencil thin and walked with a limp. A thirteen year-old boy with huge yearning eyes who was always an unlucky patient on the children’s floor of the hospital where my youngest daughter was all too often incarcerated.

Curtis had sickle cell anemia, an incurable, painful and terminal disease that plagues young people of African descent.

I would meander into his room to spend a little time with the rebellious loner and would often end up refereeing a screaming match between him and one of the nurses. The street-wise Curtis would usually win.

Over the course of a few years (the hospital was always my home-away-from-home), I eventually learned of the horror of his upbringing, the sad reality of his current life and the apparent dimness of his future. Read more

You might be aware that 10 Million Clicks For Peace co-founder, Rick Beneteau, founded the Internet Toy Drive back in 2001 as a corporate sponsor of the U.S. Marine’s Toys for Tots charity which raised a lot of money for toys for families in need for a decade (NFL quarterback Drew Bledsoe was his sponsor for all 10 years). This year, he wants to loan Toys for Tots a brand new video (Rick co-wrote and produced the song, Children Are the Very Heart of Christmas, in 1988) for their campaign which is now in full swing. You’ll see at the end that it asks viewers to donate to Toys for Tots. Please SHARE this Christmas video with everybody you know and let’s help a lot of children in need!

How to be Loved (from Julian)

Our highest purpose in this life is to learn to love, and to learn to do so in ever greater measures.

10 Million Clicks For Peace is an example of what can happen when one person strongly desired to help two other people who happened to be in a war zone. It is a good example of love in everyday life, and an illustration that we are far more capable than we think we are of loving on a larger and more magnificent scale.

Wherever you are and whatever you are doing, it is possible for you to experience love in greater measure. But, we cannot discover how to do this unless we first ask “How?” Read more
