The Power of Giving (a John Harricharan Article)

This is worth reading again. From our dear friend and loving supporter, John Harricharan:-)

It was a really hot summer’s day many years ago. I was on my way to pick up two items at the grocery store. In those days, I was a frequent visitor to the supermarket because there never seemed to be enough money for a whole week’s food-shopping at once.

You see, my young wife, after a tragic battle with cancer, had died just a few months earlier. There was no insurance — just many expenses and a mountain of bills. I held a part-time job, which barely generated enough money to feed my two young children. Things were bad — really bad.

And so it was that day, with a heavy heart and four dollars in my pocket, I was on my way to the supermarket to purchase a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread. The children were hungry and I had to get them something to eat. As I came to a red traffic light, I noticed on my right, a young man, a young woman and a child on the grass next to the road. The blistering noonday sun beat down on them without mercy. Read more

Vision of the Violet (10MC member writing)

Vision of the Violet

In the northwest corner of the solarium sits the battered bamboo bookshelf and an equally battered bamboo tea caddy, both acquired for a song when scouting yard sales or garbage day castoffs. The two could be siblings, they have the same curious decorative coils. Mute witness to their separate heritage, however, is their racial contrast: the tea caddy long hence submitted to a dark stain, while the bookcase is bright blonde.

The furniture is not where our message lies, however, but in its occupant.  On the middle shelf of the bookcase is an African Violet, venerable for its kind as the bookcase and tea caddy are for theirs. The violet has traveled many a mile with me, uncomplaining and usually neglected, yet more and more frequently these days it erupts in a mass of deep purple double flowers. From a tiny cutting barely a few inches across, it has slowly grown over the years to take command of the entire bookshelf. Read more

Christmas Story: A True Story of a Holiday Miracle (Christmas article)

This post first appeared in our blog here.

Long, long ago, in a small, tropical village in a country far, far away, a little boy lived with his parents in a two room house. He could not have been more than four or five years old and his entire experience of life was limited to the fishing and farming village, his neighbors and friends.

It wasn’t that the little boy was unhappy. Given his situation, he was a rather cheerful, optimistic lad, but times were hard for his parents. The village was recovering from the recent floods that had wiped out his parents livelihood. And the Christmas holidays were just around the corner. Read more

A Bridge to Peace (peace article)

This article was excerpted from the wonderful book, The Compassionate Rebel Revolution.

A bridge is about oneness, the establishment of oneness—peace. —Sri Chimnoy

Atop the Sri Chimnoy Bridge that joins the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, a lineup of rush hourtraffic is crawling its way homeward. Along the narrow pedestrian paths that border the peace bridge, hand-held signs with antiwar messages pop up and down begging for attention from oncoming motorists.

John and Marie Braun stand at either end of the bridge overlooking the Mississippi River greeting new arrivals, talking about the message, waving their own placards in the gusty, chilly breeze. Marie tightly clutches a gloved hand around a handmade sign with bold black letters on a white poster board that reads: Read more

A Christmas Story of Giving

Oh, about seventeen years ago, I was spending Christmas as a newly divorced, single mother. I was 26 years old and my son was three. I worked two jobs, just to afford to live in a housing project, in a very scary neighborhood. I had no Christmas tree, I had no money, I had no gifts for my little boy. Not one! Talk about depressing…

Thank God for the U.S. Marine Corps. and a very special friend with a very special family.

That year I stood in line for several hours, waiting to pick out a gift for my son. I was not in a mall or toy store - I was in a public library, standing in line to receive a gift from Toys for Tots. I was happy to stand there, no matter how long it might take. Read more
