Best of Steve Goodier: Face of Love

Milton Berle once quipped that “all the world loves a lover — except people who are waiting to use the phone.”

Love has many faces. The faces we see so often are ones of infatuation and romance. We speak of “falling in love” and feel, too, as if we are in free fall. But the face of love I appreciate the most is not romance, as much as I am drawn to it, but one I can always count on to be there. It is the face of devotion.

I see that face in the couple who were engaging in a dinner time disagreement. To the children’s amazement, their father jumped up from the table, grabbed two sheets of paper, and said to his wife, “Let’s make a list of everything we don’t like about each other.” Read more

Best of Steve Goodier: Needless Worry

A story worth dusting off is about a man who bragged: “I only worry about two things — whether I am sick or well. If I’m well, I have nothing to worry about! And if I’m sick, I’ve only got two things to worry about — whether I get better or whether I die. If I get better, I have nothing to worry about! And if I die, I’ve only got two things to worry about — whether I go to heaven or hell. If I go to heaven, I have nothing to worry about. And if I go to hell, I’ll be so busy greeting my friends I won’t have time to worry! So why worry?”

Regardless of how you feel about his view of life after life, he makes a good point about worry! There is really no room for needless concern about the future. I like what Ralph Waldo Emerson said about worry: Read more

A story about an old Bendix washing machine helped one man get through the valley of loss.

His parents acquired the washer when John Claypool was a small boy. It happened during World War II. His family owned no washing machine and, since gasoline was rationed, they could ill afford trips to the laundry several miles away. Keeping clothes clean became a problem for young John’s household.

A family friend was drafted into the service, and his wife prepared to go with him. John’s family offered to store their furniture while they were away. To the family’s surprise, the friends suggested they use their Bendix while they were gone. “It would be better for it to be running,” they said, “than sitting up rusting.” So this is how they acquired the washer. Some people never need help. One man’s got his foot caught in some railroad tracks. He tried to get it out but couldn’t.

He heard a noise and turned around to see a train coming. In a panic he prayed, “Dear God, please get my foot out of these tracks and I’ll stop my heavy drinking and smoking!”

Nothing happened. He was still stuck, and the train was getting closer! Read more

Enthusiasm is something I can get excited about!

I remember a story told about playwright and U.S. Ambassador to Italy, Claire Booth Luce. She became a Roman Catholic late in life and, like many others converted to something new, she seemed to possess limitless enthusiasm and energy about her new faith.

A reporter once spotted her engrossed in deep conversation with the pope. He crept within earshot, all the while wondering what important issues the ambassador and the pope could be discussing. Finally, he was close enough to hear the pope say to Ms. Luce, “But I already am a Catholic!” Read more

An airline passenger struck up a conversation with a stranger who was sniffling, apparently due to a recent head cold. “Look at me!” he said. “Never a day’s sickness in my life, and all due to simple food,” he boasted. “Why, from the age of twenty to that of forty I lived an absolutely simple, regular life — no pampering, no late hours, no extravagances. Every day, in fact, I was in bed regularly at nine o’clock and up again at five in the morning. I ate a plain meal at noon and, after that, exercised for an hour, then…”

“Excuse me,” interrupted the sniffling stranger in the next seat, “but what were you in for?” Read more

You heard about the sign posted on a rancher’s fence? On the other side of the fence resides the biggest, meanest looking bull you can imagine. The sign is intended to strike fear into the hearts of would-be trespassers. It reads: “Don’t attempt to cross this field unless you can do it in 9.9 seconds. The bull can do it in 10 flat!” Don’t try to cross that field unless you are prepared! And isn’t that the way it is in life? We have to be ready when the opportunity arises or else we will have little chance of success.

Sixth-grade schoolteacher Ms. Shelton believed in readiness. Students remember how she walked in on the first day of class and began writing words of an eighth-grade caliber on the chalkboard. They quickly protested that the words were not on their level and they couldn’t learn them. Read more

As the Hayman wildfire in Colorado begins to wane, those of  us living around the perimeter occasionally allow ourselves glimmers of hope that all will soon be normal again. No, the forests will not return for many years. Houses lost will not be rebuilt soon. And displaced families won’t find anything resembling normal for many months. The fire itself will still smolder, we’re told, until snow flies this Fall. But, just as crocuses pushing through frozen ground announce the coming of Spring, so patches of blue sky through smoky haze now proclaim the worst may be over.

The fire, we have learned, was set by a forest service  technician. She probably never intended to burn almost 140,000 acres of beautiful wilderness in the Rocky Mountains, but it will be months before courts determine whether or not the catastrophe was purely accidental. Numerous homes were destroyed. Lives of firefighters were lost, not by flames, but an automobile accident as they rushed to help. The cost of fighting the fire and property damage will be in the hundreds of millions. Read more

Not many people have heard of Bill Havens. But Bill became an  unlikely hero of sorts - at least among those who knew him best. Here is his story:

At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, the sport of canoe racing was added to the list of international competitions. The favorite team in the four-man canoe race was the United States team. One member of that
team was a young man by the name of Bill Havens.

As the time for the Olympics neared, it became clear that Bill’s wife would give birth to their first child about the time that the US team would be competing in the Paris games. In 1924 there were no jet airliners from Paris to the United States, only slow ocean-going ships. And so Bill found himself in a dilemma. Should he go to Paris and risk not being at his wife’s side when their baby was born? Or should he withdraw from the team and remain with his family? Bill’s wife insisted that he go to Paris. After all, competing in the Olympics was the culmination of a life-long dream. But Bill felt conflicted and, after much soul-searching, decided to withdraw from the competition and remain home where he could support his wife when the child arrived. He considered being at her side his highest priority - even higher than going to Paris to fulfill his dream. Read more
