A young mother enlisted the help of a friend in taking her infant identical twins to the doctor. Since the waiting area was full, the two women, each with a twin, were seated on opposite sides of the room. After a few minutes someone commented, “It’s amazing how much those two babies look alike!”

The friend was quick to reply, “Well, they should. They have the same father.” I haven’t heard whether the misunderstanding was ever straightened out.. Read more

It’s one thing to goof. But it’s another thing to do it in front of a stadium full of people! In their book Oops (The Rutledge Press, 1981), authors Richard Smith and Edward Decter tell of such slip-ups. One occurred during a soccer match between two Brazilian teams. (To protect the player involved, I won’t name the teams.) The first goal was scored within three seconds after kickoff. What made the score particularly hard for the team’s fans to take was the fact that it was made while their goalie was still on one knee with head bowed in prayer.

There is certainly a time for prayer, but this poor man learned the hard way that there is also a time for action. In fact, both are necessary in a well-lived life. As Gandhi once said, “I have so much to accomplish today, I will have to meditate two hours instead of one.” Read more

An expert on whales was telling friends about some of the unusual findings he had made. “For instance,” he said, “some whales can communicate at a distance of 300 miles.”

“What on earth would one whale say to another 300 miles away?” asked a sarcastic member of the group.

“I’m not absolutely sure,” answered the expert, “but it sounds something like this: ‘Heeeeeeey! Can you hear me nowwww!?!’ ” Read more

Steve Goodier - Take Action

One golfer had an absolutely horrible day at the links. His ball lay on an anthill and he swung viciously with a five iron. Again and again he missed the ball and chopped away at the hill, killing ants and sending sand flying through the air. One frightened ant turned to another and said in panic, “We’d better get on the ball if we want to stay alive!”

So it is with all of us. There is a time to think, but also a time to do. There is a time to learn, but also a time to act. There is a time to gather information, but also a time to make decisions.

It’s been said that knowing something doesn’t make a difference. But taking what you know and doing something with it makes all the difference. Read more

All stressed up and no place to blow. Does that sometimes sound like you?

It is rarely the big crises of life that cause us destructive worry. Rather, those persistent small concerns do the most long-term damage to our spirits, minds and bodies.

According to Bernard Asbell and Karen Wynn in the book WHAT THEY KNOW ABOUT YOU (Random House, 1991) here are the top ten reasons middle-aged people worry:

1. Concern about weight
2. Health of a family member
3. Rising prices
4. House maintenance
5. Too much to do
6. Misplacing or losing things
7. Outside or yard maintenance
8. Property, investments, and taxes
9. Crime
10. Physical appearance Read more

The airline pilot announced over the intercom, “Folks, I’ve got good news and bad news for you. The bad news is…we’re lost. The good news is…we’re making great time!

It’s too easy to live our lives like that, isn’t it? Always a bit too busy. In a hurry to accomplish the day’s tasks. Rushing around…but not clear exactly where we want to ultimately end up.

It’s been provocatively said, “Millions long for immortality who do not know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon.” The problem is…they know they would like to accomplish something important with their lives or they would like to make a certain income or they would like to be happy. But when it comes to making the journey toward those destinations, they feel stuck. In short, they are lost. Read more

Steve Goodier - A Hero for Our Time

You may be acquainted with a real-life hero!

An American tourist in Tel Aviv was about to enter the impressive Mann Auditorium to take in a concert by the Israel Philharmonic. He was admiring the unique architecture, the sweeping lines of the entrance, and the modern decor throughout the building. Finally he turned to his escort and asked if the building was named for Thomas Mann, the world famous author.

“No,” his friend said, “it’s named for Fredric Mann, from Philadelphia.” Read more

Steve Goodier - Your Support System

Have you noticed how help is often available just when you need it? A few years ago, a California artist carved a unique Christmas gift for his parents in Connecticut. It was a four-foot-tall statue of a hitchhiker, with thumb extended. (The perfect gift for the discriminating homeowner) His gift was unusual, but his method of shipping the statue to his folks was even stranger. He simply set it beside the road and let it “hitch” its way across the continent. Around the statue’s neck he hung a sign bearing his parents’ New England address, and across its chest was printed the word “Connecticut” in large letters. Several weeks and some 2,500 miles later, unknown hands delivered the gift to the woodcarver’s parents in time for Christmas.

I find it heartening to remember that there are always those willing to help. And it’s true regardless of the circumstance. There is someone willing to extend a hand, lend an ear or share a heart. Whether you need temporary assistance or your life has experienced a meltdown, there is someone who wants to help. Read more

Steve Goodier - How to Have a Life of Joy

Do you know how to have a life of joy?

A businessman on his deathbed called his friend and said, “Bill, I want you to promise me that when I die you will have my remains cremated.” “And what,” his friend asked, “do you want me to do with your ashes?” The businessman said, “Just put them in an envelope and mail them to the Internal Revenue Service and write on the envelope, `NOW YOU HAVE EVERYTHING!’”

Paying taxes is not usually a joy. But GIVING can be joyful. We pay the taxes because we have to. But when we CHOOSE to give time or money, then giving can add to our overall happiness. Read more

Steve Goodier - Find an Excuse to Love

“Some children just need more love.” I don’t know how many times I heard Mrs. Tucker say that.

Mrs. Tucker was a 73-year-old woman who worked with me in an after-school daycare program that paid me a much-needed stipend while in graduate school. She rarely missed an opportunity to show warmth and affection to a child.

That part time job was undoubtedly the most difficult position of my life! I felt completely unprepared for the work; I had no training and my temperament was such that it seemed all I could do to simply not to “lose it” with the kids. Exacerbating the problem was the fact that this after school program was operated by a church board that believed that NO CHILD should be turned away. I applauded the sentiment, but soon discovered that children who HAD been turned away by other facilities in the city, primarily because of serious behavioral problems, found their way to us.

I reminded myself that I was hired to watch the children, play with them and lead arts and crafts — not to fix them. And my only help was Mrs. Tucker, a 73-year-old retired social worker who ran the operation. All that stood between the kids and disaster was me and a 73-year-old woman! And I wasn’t a sturdy defense! But Mrs. Tucker was. Read more
