Rising On Your Own Self-Love and Instincts and Going All the Way

When you reach toward a dream, you reach toward your highest self-love.

That means you leave “the one who can’t do it” behind. They won’t let you take your delusions on the rocket ship anymore. This is a path of shaking off the shackles, the status quo, the old sad stories about what you don’t have or can’t do and rising on your own self-love and instincts. Your magnificence knows no limits, so you will need to shed every single one of yours. It’s a magical, messy, sacred transformation, if you ask me. Still, the glimpse of something more will impel you to trust in something more. And you will say yes, while everything small within you begs for a rain check.

But you will say yes, because everything sane within you will not allow you to take a rain check on your life. Read more

Bet the Farm on Your Own Life: Awaken To Your Own Authority

Getting the A:

I used to be the girl who needed to nab an A in every subject in school. I’d study what you wanted me to study—what grabbed your attention, not mine. That’s because I had no idea that chasing approval and “security” was keeping me from discovering my certainty and my power, my chance to create everything I’d ever wanted.

But this is what I’ve come to learn again and again: You can’t chase approval and aliveness at the same time. Do you want to live someone else’s advice? Or do you want to live your birthright?

An inspired life is the result of owning your own brilliance—following your own indwelling authority. It’s the intimate landscape of learning how to listen to and trust the infallible specificity of your guidance. This is a life that isn’t on any map. Read more

Why do we persist in acting insanely?

One of my favorite quotes which I’m certain you’ve heard before is:

Insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results.~Unknown, but often attributed to Albert Einstein

It’s so true, isn’t it? When I desire a cup of coffee, I pour freshly boiled water into a cup, add a teaspoon of my favorite instant coffee, some organic milk, and hey presto, I get a decent cup of coffee, similar to the one I had yesterday and the day before and the day before that.

I certainly don’t get vanilla ice cream or carrot juice. Those, as you would know, require different ingredients and different equipment, not to mention different conditions relating to such things as temperature and agitation. Read more

The Secret to More Energy: Using Your Unused Gifts

September 27, 2012 by admin

I talked to a woman who had been very gifted in music, but who hadn’t pursued it as an adult. “I am afraid of failing,” she said, but as we talked further, she admitted in the quiet tones of held back truth, that she felt like a failure now. She felt tired and angry, out of sorts with her life. I don’t blame her.

It takes more effort to create a life you don’t want than to create the life you crave.

An unused gift is a keg of dynamite. It’s dangerous. It leaks out and begins to poison you. It haunts your cells with a hoarse song, “use me or die, use me or die.” Your gifts are powerful energy sources. It takes so much energy to hold back life. It hurts to choose smallness. It hurts to let yourself down in secret ways, muffling the cries that no one else hears. It hurts to resist the evolutionary instinct within you to grow, express, go beyond survival and thrive, and stake your one true place upon this planet. Read more

There’s Only One Note You Came to Sing

I listen to creative minds, visionaries, and entrepreneurs all day long in my coaching practice and I am moved by the spirit that moves them. Like you, they bounce off walls with ambition, hunger, and frustration. They secretly dream big, because they are big. Still they whisper their most gorgeous desires, swallowing hard, as though they are confessing, say, a small hygiene problem or a third head. “I don’t even know if I’ll ever have what I want,” they say. But I do. I know they are relentlessly drawn to where they belong.

We don’t choose our wildest dreams. They choose us. They point us toward our natural environment. When we’re not using our deepest gifts, we can feel like trout thrashing about on a dock desperate to find water. It’s that necessary to live our calling. It’s eventually unbearable to deny our love, strength, and essence. We’ve said “yes” to some sacred arrangement in the ethers, and here on earth—until we live our most meaningful dreams—we ache with the pangs of blessings unfulfilled. We can golf if we want to, but it will never fill that hole. We can shop, but we can’t buy our freedom. We can even hire a “life coach,” but then, and I hate this part, we still have to do our life. Love yourself more than your image

Have you ever ignored what you really want to do…because you thought you should do something else? Have you let an “image of yourself” make your decisions… rather than your True Self? Our real lives come from real desire. This past New Year’s Eve, I learned that real desire is about letting go of “perfect pictures,” and loving myself–more than my image.

I have never liked New Years Eve. For me, it’s more like New Insecurities Eve. Some stupid date on a calendar will send me into wondering: Is this a good enough way to spend this night? Am I as alive as I should be? Are other people having the time of their lives right now? How come I don’t have strappy shoes—and would they go with purple sweat pants? In my twenties and thirties, I imagined dancing at parties in penthouses with flashing lights, confetti, streamers, electric strangers and dangerous kisses. I felt boring eating take-out lo mein and watching the ball drop in Times Square from the dimness of my living room. In later years, I’ve felt the need to perform some sacred ritual for the New Year, chant my way past midnight, meditate, or write poetry at just the right hour.

This past New Years Eve I told myself I’d meditate from 11:30p.m to 12:00a.m. and bring in the New Year in prayer, gratitude and a sitting lotus position. But truth is, I wanted to curl up on the couch and watch a movie. And by the time I admitted this, I also realized that the movie would go straight through past 12a.m. and I’d miss “the magic moment.” So I sat reading instead and waiting for 11:30p.m. Still I squirmed in my chair, feeling like a five year old in the back seat of a car listening to the adults talk and kicking the upholstery. I really wanted to watch a movie. Read more

The Secret Equation of Creating the Work You Love: Dedication Minus Anxiety

July 11, 2012 by admin

Can you do the work you love with crazy dedication– but not anxiety?

I want you to drop the mindset that starting your own yoga studio or pursuing water color painting is like handling a radioactive substance, and that every move and minute counts. The only thing that counts is your commitment to keep showing up. If your heart remains open, the currents of abundance bubble and circulate. Everything takes shape from there.

Make ardent efforts– but make your efforts no big deal. I know it’s kind of like a Zen koan: “What’s the sound of one hand clapping?” It’s impossible, until you leapfrog into another state of consciousness. But that’s the point. When we do the work we love, we are learning how to work in a new way. We are learning how to become servants of the flow, passion-keepers, those who enter another dimension to bring back drops of ambrosia for humanity and ourselves. It’s a far cry from punching a clock. Read more

Floundering Towards Grace: Making Big Moves with Small Steps

April 8, 2012 by admin

I think one of the things that has made me successful in life is I’m willing to do things that are not flattering. I have been willing to not have it “all together,” and to still believe I stood on a path that promised more security than any other road in the world. I left a fancy legal career and waited tables, yes, touched food, so I could explore my life and my writing. I counted my dimes and quarters. I lived in a tiny hat-sized apartment. I lived a life that did not look grand. But I had the humility, somewhere inside me, to know that I was making big moves with tiny steps.

I remember when I first changed my career, I was terrified about THE FUTURE. I couldn’t see where I was going and part of that, was because I had my head wedged in the fridge, looking for solace and clarity. But an inner voice told me at the time, “If you stick with the courage to do this, you will be an expert for others in years to come.” At the time I thought, yeah right, who needs an expert in freaking out? But today I do speak to thousands, and fans have told me repeatedly that my book This Time I Dance! Creating the Work You Love is the Bible for anybody in transition. It turns out, I do know how to freak out, but I also know how to keep going–and how to claim grace. Read more

Famed European lecturer and haulocast survivor, Viktor E. Frankl (1905-1997), delivers a powerful message that students today should pay close attention to. Below is the biography taken by permission from Dr. Frankl’s website:

Viktor E. Frankl, MD, PhD, was Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry at the University of Vienna. For 25 years he was head of the Vienna Neurological Policlinic. His “Logotherapy/Existential Analysis” came to be known as the “Third Viennese School of Psychotherapy”. He held professorships at Harvard, Stanford, Dallas, and Pittsburgh, and was Professor of Logotherapy at the U.S. International University in San Diego, California. Frankl’s 39 books appeared in 40 languages. His book “Man’s Search for Meaning” has sold millions of copies and has been listed among “the ten most influential books in America”.
