Steve Goodier - Love the Children

Felice R. Prager writes in Reader’s Digest (August, 1999) that the kids had been driving her nuts, asking her to buy them a talking bird, until she finally got them a parrot. They named him Wilbur and tried to teach him some words, but all he would say was, “Hello. Hello.” Her oldest son Jeff worked with Wilbur, trying to get him to say, “Jeff is the greatest.” Nothing.

Her husband tried. “Give this guy a raise,” he repeated. Nothing.

Felice took a turn. “Clean your room.” Still nothing. Read more

A Kansas cyclone hit a farmhouse just before dawn one morning. It lifted the roof off, picked up the beds on which a farmer and his wife slept, and set them down gently in the next county.

The wife began to cry.

“Don’t be scared, Mary,” her husband comforted. “We’re not hurt.”

Mary continued to cry. “I’m not scared,” she responded between sobs.

“I’m happy . ’cause this is the first time in 14 years we’ve been out together.”

I find that little things, such as too little time and attention, will hurt an intimate relationship (marriage, parent-child, or close friendships) more than anything else. We can usually get through the times of crisis; it’s neglect that often destroys closeness and intimacy. Read more

The poet Rupert Brooke set out to travel by boat from England to America. Everyone on deck had someone there to see him or her off - everyone except him. Rupert Brooke felt lonely, terribly lonely. Watching the hugging and kissing and goodbyes, he wished he had someone to miss him.

The poet saw a youngster and asked his name. “William,” the boy answered.

“William,” he asked, “would you like to earn a few shillings?”

“Sure I would! What do I have to do?” Read more

Steve Goodier - How to Have a Life of Joy

Do you know how to have a life of joy?

A businessman on his deathbed called his friend and said, “Bill, I want you to promise me that when I die you will have my remains cremated.” “And what,” his friend asked, “do you want me to do with your ashes?” The businessman said, “Just put them in an envelope and mail them to the Internal Revenue Service and write on the envelope, `NOW YOU HAVE EVERYTHING!’”

Paying taxes is not usually a joy. But GIVING can be joyful. We pay the taxes because we have to. But when we CHOOSE to give time or money, then giving can add to our overall happiness. Read more

There’s Only One Note You Came to Sing

I listen to creative minds, visionaries, and entrepreneurs all day long in my coaching practice and I am moved by the spirit that moves them. Like you, they bounce off walls with ambition, hunger, and frustration. They secretly dream big, because they are big. Still they whisper their most gorgeous desires, swallowing hard, as though they are confessing, say, a small hygiene problem or a third head. “I don’t even know if I’ll ever have what I want,” they say. But I do. I know they are relentlessly drawn to where they belong.

We don’t choose our wildest dreams. They choose us. They point us toward our natural environment. When we’re not using our deepest gifts, we can feel like trout thrashing about on a dock desperate to find water. It’s that necessary to live our calling. It’s eventually unbearable to deny our love, strength, and essence. We’ve said “yes” to some sacred arrangement in the ethers, and here on earth—until we live our most meaningful dreams—we ache with the pangs of blessings unfulfilled. We can golf if we want to, but it will never fill that hole. We can shop, but we can’t buy our freedom. We can even hire a “life coach,” but then, and I hate this part, we still have to do our life. A reminder from 10 Million Clicks For Peace co-founder, Rick Beneteau, about gratitude and giving. Happy Thanksgiving to all our U.S. readers and subscribers.

It was one of those bitter Ontario winter days. A short but welcome lull between January snow storms. The inclement weather during the past week had bared our cupboards and it was the logical break we needed to get to the grocery store.

Jenn and I pulled into the crowded, icy parking lot putting us quite far from the entrance. Everyone else seemed to be taking advantage of the first snowless afternoon in awhile to replenish as well. Read more

Jenn and I pulled into the crowded, icy parking lot putting us quite far from the entrance. Everyone else seemed to be taking advantage of the first snowless afternoon in awhile to replenish as well.

It was cold and blustery though as we half-trotted towards the doors eager to get away from the wind. Just as we were about to find shelter I noticed a man, about 40 years old, in a grungy military coat, his bare hands clutching a tattered cardboard sign that begged, “I am homeless. Pls buy me a meel.” Read more
