As a coach, I’m in the business of helping people get resounding answers to their most pressing decisions in life. Now, it’s not uncommon for, say, a career coaching client to call and say, “I like gardening, day-trading, playing the oboe, hiking in jungles, and learning about shamanic healing energy techniques, and Russian Poetry. So how do I put that all together?” Then they pause and wait for their magic answer. They will be pausing a long time, I assure you.
I will tell you what I tell them. It’s tantalizing to have a thousand ideas, but, really, you don’t have a thousand different directions. The mind flirts with a thousand directions. But, in any given moment, your heart has only one or two. You don’t even have a decision to make. It’s already been made and encrypted within you, like the rhythm of your toes soft padding on the floorboards and the delicate, determined map of your fingerprint. It’s just there, strange as the moon, yet familiar as your breath. Read more

Wisdom from Lao-tzu

Flowers are love embodied. Look deeply at the color.
Feel the vibrancy. Put your nose a little closer.
Look deeply. Fall inside.
Start your life over right here, right now, inside a flower.
Make a new decision. Then feel again.
Decide you are okay right here now.
Hold that thought, drop down a foot, now love.

“The first and best victory is to conquer self.” — Plato
As I parent my children and mentor other families one area we’re constantly improving upon is the art of self-discipline. Many parents ask me “how can I make my children do their studies?” or “How can I make them do what I want?” My response to these type of questions is simple. Ask yourself “What am I doing to model the behavior I wish to see in my children?” Humans are wired to mirror others. Young children especially mimick what they see and hear, whether right or wrong children are products of their environment. Be the change you wish to see in your children.
Consider this: as we’re raising our children we’re raising ourselves. No matter our age we never stop learning and growing. The real question is what are we learning? Are we applying it to everyday life? Remember our children are watching us all the time. What are they observing in you? Read more

An Attitude of Gratitude

“Hold on to the center
and make up your mind to rejoice
in this paradise called life.”
? Lao-tzu
I believe that Wayne Dyer may have been the first to coin the phrase, “An attitude of gratitude,” and so it is with great admiration and respect for him that I, too, honor this wonderful saying.
Gratitude is so much more than just the words “thank you.” It is the very core of a soul affirming its connection to the greatest and highest power in the Universe; and it is my belief that the power of this connection is what miracles are made of.
So many of us “ask” and then “wait” and then “thank.” What gratitude really is, however, is a constant state of appreciation; a constant affirmation that what is already before us is the gift. As Albert Einstein said, “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” Read more
