3 Breakthrough Shifts to Activate Your True Potential…

Using Your Wild and Beautiful Forces

Traveling around the country, speaking, I feel the newness crackling everywhere. We are living in times of change. And each of us is a change-agent, whether we know it or not.

The weather is changing. The economy is changing. And these are not the times to stand still. Settling will lead to chaos now. It’s time to make your contribution. Sing your song. Climb your mountain. Save your life. It’s show time. You were born for this time and now more than ever before, there is Unseen Support for you to do this.

St Francis of Assisi said, “There are beautiful and wild forces within us.” It’s an evolutionary time, and life supports that which supports life. Trust your irrational, inspired desires. It’s time to walk beyond the iron gates of control and conservatism and into the fertile rain forest of listening to your own fresh instincts. It’s a new world, baby. Read more

Outgrowing the Life You’ve Known: The Loneliness & Loss of Blossoming

December 19, 2012 by admin

“It’s lonely to follow your bliss,” said Deb, a student in a recent workshop. “Say more,” I asked, trying not to salivate. I confess it’s a topic near and dear to my heart lately.

“I used to have all these friends. We’d eat, drink, and bitch about our lives. We’d tell stories of stupid co-workers, Cretan, evil bosses, you know,” she said. Of course, I remembered that. “Trading distressing stories like baseball cards– and suddenly, you have nothing ‘sexy’ to swap because you’re focused on your dreams now, not your setbacks,” I said. “Exactly,” said Deb. “But now I don’t have that camaraderie, because I’m not pissed off anymore. No one from my old life wants to hear how much fun I’m having. And, frankly, I don’t want to hear how much their lives don’t work.”

This is the “problem” with growing. Sometimes, in order to connect with yourself, you have to separate from what you’ve known. The aliveness of love will ruin your chances of stagnation. It will call you out. Success demands loss. Sometimes, we have to let go of waning definitions, circumstances, or relationships that no longer reflect us so that we can blossom wide. Read more

Best of Blog: Every Hero Begins as Fool

In celebration of April Fool’s Day, I want to encourage you to be more “foolish” in your life. There is power in daring to be different.

Great advances have never come from the conventionally minded among us, those who worship their data, never wear purple, and chastise the unknown. Change comes from us “madcaps” who obey the mandate to be alive — and chase the gleam of inspiration, the truth we know in our bones — more than the facts that are known.

The world’s healers, industry leaders, artists and visionaries of tomorrow — are likely the neglected fools of right now, scrambling to pay their rent while devoting themselves to bold ideas and inexhaustible generosity. Let’s face it, some half-cocked chuckleheads of the past gave us electricity, medicine, automobiles, a few trips to the pale white moon and back, not to mention hair dye and decaffeinated coffee. God bless them all. Can you imagine the Wright brothers assuming they could snub the laws of gravity and fly? Think about it. Many of us cower and shrink, thinking we’re extravagant, for believing we might just write a screenplay that sells. Read more

The Best Use of Your Time is to Have Some Time

Sometimes things don’t work out or things fall through– because your dance card is already full. You just don’t know it’s full.

I’m someone who fills up her time, I confess. Blank space makes me nervous. Don’t get me wrong. I love freedom. I love the long country road it promises. But the urban me kicks in, bites her nails, and pushes for engagement. Productive me starts worrying and assigning minutes, worrying we won’t get things done, extract the most glory, make things count.

But sometimes I find the best use of my time– is to have some time. Read more

Speak Your Desires, and Your Truth Emerges - and Nothing Prevails Against the Truth

Talk only about your desires. What you focus on, you strengthen.

I often give these instructions in my Unleash Your Calling workshops. But of course, on weeknights, with my best girlfriend, when no one is paying me, and the moon hangs low, I allow myself to whine. Well, just a little.

But the other night, I did the exercise I often assign in workshops. I told my friend to keep me talking about what I loved, and not let me interrupt myself with why I thought I couldn’t have it. She did her job and I did mine. I spoke aloud my latest desires, dreams, and excitement for 8 minutes straight. I did not say, “But I don’t know how to make it happen.” I did not say “Of course, it’s unrealistic to want this to just fall into my lap like this.” I did not focus on my past and former disappointments or the fact that I have dated men that have been locked up– so how could I think I know what to want?

Now keep in mind, before I began the exercise, I was not in a positive place. I told my friend I was going to ignore “realistic” concerns about this particular desire. I would turn off the sirens for 8 minutes. I also told her, in very grave rational terms, just to get it off my chest, before I dived off the deep end, that my desire would sound inflated and hallucinatory. I didn’t have high hopes for where this exercise would take me, and started feeling for all the students I’d ever inflicted it upon. Nevertheless, I bravely suited up and trudged off into cotton candy land… Read more

How You End is How You Begin: Getting Ready for a New Year

January 4, 2012 by admin

I don’t know about you, but for many years I wanted to flee across the border to the New Year as fast as possible. I wanted to slam doors, leap over difficulties, burn my past, and be model-thin, fat in the wallet, and Zen-confident “in the future.” Other years, jaded me took control. I spit on resolutions and goals, maybe lit one of those cigarettes I couldn’t quit, and wouldn’t even bother putting my breath into one of those party noise makers, so to speak. But this is what I know now. We do have the chance to begin again. We have the chance to enter miraculous time. But there is no “New Year” without a blessed year before it. How you end one year is how you begin the next.

I want you to end this year with love. Read more

You Are in the Best of Times

I’m growing/making changes in my business and life. “Reinvention” is a lovely term. It sounds like I know what I’m doing. Like some Lexus engineer in a white lab coat, retooling designs based on crash tests, forecasts, and a genius’ scratch pads. All I’ve got is scratch pads.

I need to take actions, but there are many choices and they mean so much. I feel like a contestant on a game show, where it’s all on the line. Choose the wrong thing and you’re buzzed off the show, kicked from the candy store, in front of millions of people who criticize you. Damn, I want to wake up in the palace already, where life is handled and champagne is served at 4:00 p.m upon a golden tray. Some days, I don’t want to be a hero. I want a butler. I don’t want to find my secret strength. I want to watch re-runs of Gray’s Anatomy.

I know you know what I’m talking about. Read more

Find Your Own Way to Goodness: How to Listen to Your Truth Instead of Expectations

I’m one of those people who have tended to doubt themselves, particularly when it comes to making decisions. Give me a test where I have to memorize things, and I’m your girl. I’m a poster child for the American education system. I learned how not to think for myself, so that I could score higher, win ribbons, and do the things I really didn’t want to do. Then when I walked out of a legal career to reinvent my life based on listening to my desires and instincts, I realized I had no idea how to go beyond someone else’s rules and find my own code. And this is what creating an inspired life is all about. It’s about being true to yourself, the self you are in this minute, not the self you think you should be, and not what other people– or even you– would usually do.

Shakespeare, the dude, wrote, “To thine own self be true” and I think he would have made a fine career coach or guru. Real success comes from astonishing independence, being present to your immediate truth rather than to external or internal expectations. Inspiration doesn’t always arrive dressed in linen and smelling like lavender. Sometimes, it comes through raw insistence of what you do not want to hear. Listening is the price of flourishing. How to Have an Invincible New Year

January 6, 2011 by admin

This year don’t set hollow goals or inflated ones, ones that will make up for every choice you didn’t make before. That’s like getting out a whip– and calling it a rose. This year I want you to cultivate a power and presence within you that allows you to choose your good all the time, that takes every circumstance of your life and makes it a crucible that uses all of you. You are so much more than one year can offer. You are so much more than a few paltry achievements, even if they sound like the moon to you.

That said, a worthy goal or two, can help you realize how powerful you are. Sometimes we have to want something, in order to spread our great silver wings or even to discover that we have them. Read more

Life Can Be Fantastic: Your Joy is Your Power

November 19, 2010 by admin

I am committed to allowing myself to receive more freaking goodness than I can imagine. To start with, I am going to know that, independent of anyone else’s predictions or convictions, my life can be fantastic. I am going to stop calling negativity and limitation “realism.” I’m going to just start calling them negativity and limitation.

We have all bought into the superstition that goodness is a soap bubble about to burst. But I challenge you to think of sadness and strain as a bubble, too, a bubble that can burst as easily. It all depends on where you put your focus, what you call real, which altar you light your candles on.

Let me tell you a personal story. Years ago, to support the release of my first book This Time I Dance! Creating the Work you Love, I put myself on the road. It was a brave move, investing money in myself, and speaking to practically any group that had cheese and crackers. At the first event of my “tour,” I spoke to a high-powered women’s business group. They loved me and I did cartwheels inside. Read more
