And So We Must Remember (peace poem)

And So We Must Remember

My little boy wandered up to me
And asked to go for a walk,
And while we strolled hand in hand,
He asked me if we could talk.

He asked me what Remembrance meant
On this day we celebrate;
That at school they’d marched, had two minutes of silence,
But that he just couldn’t relate.

Elisabeth Kubler Ross also taught me something else that helped me, as well as assisted the process for family members of those in my care who were dying.  She spoke of how important it is to understand the remarkable power of influence we have, in needlessly extending the agony of the dying process for the patient…… Read more

In our approach to the spiritual question around care, we are remiss in our presence of listening to the patients’ concerns or conclusions, particularly if they do not match our own.  It is my firm belief that we not only can, but must learn to stand steady with the patient’s journey of belief, and not get caught up in the differences.  It is not the destination, but the manner in which we as caregivers support the journey that is of credible import here. Detours in the Grief Journey

When we don’t recognize what our pain looks like, or we’ve not ever been given permission to work it through, we divert that pain into addictions or distortions of all shapes, sizes and subtle disguises. We shape it into drug and/or alcohol addiction. Work addiction. Food or sex addiction, hoarding, or often transference from one addiction to another. So, the message of greatest import is not, “Is there pain you bear?’ but rather “what is the pain you bear?”

It is my belief that our Creator’s greatest desire for us is that we live a life of love filled with joy, peace and harmony. I believe we must embrace or internalize a meaning of spiritual peace before we can begin to walk that road. It’s like I need to be able to read before I can even begin to decipher the map’s directions, before I can attempt to locate and decide on the pathway for my own peace journey. If we are not careful, or have had limited exposures to genuine love, care and respect, we need to learn the Truth about those things first, so we do understand the feeling of true spiritual meaning in life. That means we need to face our fears regardless, whether they stand for all those little deaths, or for the big final one of our own mortality. It is true that only by facing all our fears about death, will we ever be able to embrace the fulfillment of a life well lived that ends without regret. Read more

Discussion of Grief and the Human Condition - Part 2

This is part two of a two-part series by 10 Million Clicks For Peace contributor, Corry Roach. Click here for part one.

Oddly, grief and loss carry hardship that often brings us closer together as a human family. Although the specific individuals who support us in the journey are often a surprise to us, there is a greater sense of meaning in life after bereavement. Our priorities change, giving us desire for depth of meaning in love, insight and relationships. Old relationships die off as new ones are born. We pass or fail a test of education in Life, depending on what we do with the challenges we are faced with in the experience.

Since Canadian soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan, the numbers attending Remembrance Day services in our country has grown exponentially. Our culture makes it okay to grieve on certain occasions, days, or for specific reasons or persons. And yet, when we suffer a personal loss, we tend to hide our grief away in shame or fear of being misunderstood, whether it is for the loss itself or the length of time it takes to heal from it. I must say I find this a curious habit in our western society. There appears to be a lack of education and literacy around the topic of death, bereavement and the mourning process; something I find interesting when loss is such a central part of every human life… Read more

This is part one of a two-part series by 10 Million Clicks For Peace contributor, Corry Roach. We will feature the second part tomorrow.

It is true that the more we make peace with who we are, the greater quiet wisdom we seem to project into the world around us. Especially when those big lessons in life throw us a curve ball, it takes awhile for us to find our way back to Center again. Within those intense times of grief and growth, we do actually have immense opportunities to evolve as a person. Hence the saying, when hardship visits us in this life journey, of getting bitter or getting better…

Understanding the importance of peace making within ourselves first, it does eventually change the world, one person at a time. We must first change our own world for the better before we can presume to affect the lives of those around us with peace. Read more

Grief in the Life Journey

I am often struck at how life’s experiences are all so interconnected within each individual person. We are indeed a tangle of experiences, and it is up to us what we do with those bundles, and how much we recognize the gifts in all of them, regardless of whether we name them in sorrow or in joy. I so appreciate Kahlil Gibran’s words, in The Prophet, when he says, Joy and sorrow are inseparable. Together they come, and when one sits alone with you at your board, remember that the other is asleep upon your bed

I truly believe our greatest opportunity for personal and spiritual growth rests in our deepest trials, because we are forever changed by them, whether we want to be or not. Life roughs us up, or shakes us out of our lethargic shoes sometimes, and although it doesn’t feel like a good thing at the time; it could, with hard work, be shaped into an eventual exercise of deep and sacred meaning. There are so many things that are indeed out of our hands… Read more
