A veterinarian prescribed three huge pills to be given to a sick mule. “How do I get him to take the pills?” the farmer asked.

“It’s quite simple,” replied the vet. “Just insert the pill into a pipe. Put the pipe in the mule’s mouth and blow on the other end. He will swallow the pill without realizing it.”

The next day the farmer returned, looking sickly. “You look awful!” said the doctor. “What happened?” The farmer explained, “He blew first.”

It occurs to me that some people will swallow anything! Maybe not literally, but it seems that some people are ready to believe in any new “get-rich” scheme; to follow any new fad; to swallow any fantastic story!

There is little merit in boasting an ability to “swallow” anything that comes along. Gullibility has never ranked high among the world’s virtues. But, on the other hand, how much virtue is there in believing nothing? Worthy lives are built around firmly held beliefs. It is rightly said that those who stand for nothing will likely fall for anything.

What do you stand for? In what do you passionately believe? Love? Generosity? Compassion? Forgiveness? Kindness? Joy? Peace? Loyalty? Faith? Integrity? Prayer? Work? Discipline? Beautiful beliefs build beautiful lives.

Do you want to know how to determine what you really believe? Observe how you habitually act. If you truly believe it, you will daily live it! If you believe in joy, you will usually be joyful. If you believe in generosity, you will be known as a generous person. Or if you believe in forgiveness, you will be one who readily gives a second chance. Your actions, not your words, tell the world what you truly believe.

Those beautiful beliefs will become the foundation for a beautiful life, for if you truly believe it, you will live it.
