Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.
~John F. Kennedy
What fascinates me most about this quote is why it is famous. Other than “I cannot tell a lie,” “Four score and seven years ago,” and “We have nothing to fear but fear itself,” there may not be a more famous quotation in American history. Why? Because altruism inspires people. Deep down we know of ourselves that we spend most of our days looking out for or thinking about number one - us. Altruism inspires us because we know that it is selfless acts that leave the deepest impact upon others and upon the world. If we want to find purpose and meaning we ought to pursue a life of service for others. And if everyone did this, the world would be a much better place.
Action Point: Ask not what your spouse can do for you but what you can do for your spouse. Ask not what your family can do for you but what you can do for your family. Ask not what your company can do for you but what you can do for your company. Ask not what your civic group or church can do for you but what you can do for your church or civic group. And when you have found the answer, DO IT!
