It is the duty of a good shepherd to shear his sheep, not to skin them.
~Tiberius Caesar
Every single one of us has some form of leadership that we perform. Whether at work, at home or in the community. One of the givens of leadership is that we will at times have to “shear the sheep” so to speak. That is, we will have to take one of our followers to task for something they did or said. That is just the nature of leadership. And if you aren’t willing to do this, you aren’t willing to lead. The fine art however, is to take off just the wool, and not go any deeper. Too many followers have been disheartened because rather than just taking of the wool, the criticism has been too deep, too personal, or just not warranted. Our job as the leader is to make sure that we address the issue at just enough depth to make sure we get everything.
Action Point: Is there something you need to talk to someone about? Then by all means do it. But focus in on just the issue and give it just enough ooomph to take care of business. Don’t use too much. This is a fine art and may take a few times, but you will get the hang of it and be the better for it!
