The Headwaters: Shaped by Demand

In July, Expedition Blue Planet explored the headwaters of the Colorado River to investigate how this mighty river is overallocated from the moment its waters touch the ground up in the Rocky Mountains, where the continental divide rises like a spine and demarcates the Mississippi watershed that lies to the East from the Colorado watershed that falls to the West.
Today we find that this iconic river still means life for the 20 million people that live in its basin, just as it did for the Native Americans, just as it did for the settlers who drove West and claimed it as their own. But the truth is, the minute it touches the ground we’ve allocated every drop and too often we’re not even judicious in how we use it.
In this short film, we speak to key voices in the headwaters region and chart the path of the river’s flow to investigate water use and management issues in the American West. Here, it’s all about what’s downstream. Read more

Take a few minutes to watch this truly inspirational video where a nature-loving couple nurses an injured baby hummingbird back to health. What is most amazing is the intervention of the mother hummingbird, more concerned about caring for her offspring than afraid of two-leggers.

It is so crucial to educate and engage our children in the natural wonders and the beauty of our planet and to stop the total devastation and destruction of the environment and ecosystems. One way is to educate and engage our children in “green” and eco-friendly activities.
This article will give some suggestions for spending quality time with your kids while helping to save the planet.
Step 1
Spend a day at the beach; it’s a wonderful way to engage children in the beauty of the ocean and the many specialized eco-systems that can only survive in the marine niches of our environment. It’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and play together as a family without having to spend too much money. You can pack a beach lunch, but don’t forget to include sun protection. I crawled into bed after an especially exasperating, work-filled Sunday, flipping through the television channels trying to find something at least quasi-intelligent to watch, as is one of my usual wind-down mechanisms.
What I stumbled across on the tube was not only “intelligent“, it was about intelligence – intelligence in those always-circling-above, loud, obnoxious, black birds I so disliked…

Can A Bee Show You How to Find Happiness?

My husband, Brian, finds happiness from saving bees, one bee at a time.
Where does he save bees? Right in our backyard.
Just outside his office is a swimming pool, and since there is a door right there by his desk, Brian frequently goes outside for a break – when the weather is nice, of course. While out there, he scans the pool for any unfortunate bees that are struggling to get out. Almost every day he finds one.
When he spots a bee exerting all its energy, going in circles in the pool, Brian makes his move. He wants to save the bee that cannot fly because its wings are wet. Picking up the bee on his finger, Brian knows this bee wants to be saved. Read more

Two years ago, my fabulous grandsons were visiting when I was in the middle of assembling audio/video segments for my humanitarian project, 10 Million Clicks For Peace. I decided to interview them with the hope I would get a “pearl” or two of youthful wisdom on the subject of peace.
I brought my elder up to the office to record first. The “all- boy”, comedic, Corbin, gave some fairly astute answers to my questions considering he was only seven at the time.
Then came his year-younger, more reflective brother, Cameron. This little guy is quite the deep thinker. I eagerly awaited the kinds of responses he would have. What I didn’t expect was his very first answer. Read more
