From Ted Talks You Tube site: When is the last time you did absolutely nothing for 10 whole minutes? Not texting, talking or even thinking? Mindfulness expert Andy Puddicombe describes the transformative power of doing just that: Refreshing your mind for 10 minutes a day, simply by being mindful and experiencing the present moment. (No need for incense or sitting in strange positions.

Forgiving Your Mother, Yourself, and Everyone: This is Your Lifetime to Get it Right

This Mother’s Day you have the chance to get it right.

You have the chance to open up to the one of the most significant relationships of your life. (Or moms, same goes with your kids.) My mom left this planet back in 2011. One of the best things I ever did with my life was work on healing my relationship with her. The struggle to love and forgive is a worthy struggle. It’s heroic. And it will affect every other relationship in your life. And guess what? For me, it all came down to loving myself. Go figure.

So this is a piece I wrote years ago, while visiting my mother in upstate New York. (I’ve edited it today.) I felt challenged at the time. I wanted to be the perfect daughter. But there’s something about dealing with our families that’s like taking acid. You go on a trip. Things come out of the blue. People grow extra heads. Then you come back and you think– what was that all about? Read more

Never Alone (inspirational article)

Do you ever feel alone? Do you sometimes feel like it’s you against the world? I want to share something that I have realized — I can choose to feel lonely, but I am never alone. If I feel alone, it is because I choose to ignore who I really am.

When we see ourselves as separate and alone, we are forgetting who we really are. We are seeing ourselves as physical beings… as bodies. It seems logical. My physical body is separate from your physical body; therefore, the “I” that I am must be separate from the “you” that you are. If I am separate from you, I am separate from everyone, and that means that I am on my own in this world… as are you… and everyone else. I don’t know about you, but that can be an overwhelming thought…

… until I remember who I really am. I am a spiritual being. You are a spiritual being. We are all spiritual beings experiencing life in physical bodies. When you experience yourself as spirit, inhabiting a body but not limited to your body, you will realize that, far from being alone, you are always connected to something larger than little “you.” In fact, as you get still and go within, you will experience yourself as the spiritual energy that you are. As you stay still, close your eyes, and focus within, you will experience a sense of yourself expanding beyond your body, unlimited by the apparent boundaries of your physical self. Read more

Being Grateful for Yourself, Your Unusual Life, and Your Courage: A Thanksgiving Power Practice

Some of you may be celebrating this Thanksgiving with hugs, easy conversation, turkey and pumpkin pie. Yet some of you may feel stranded, like the marble that rolled away from the group, stuck with the dust bunnies in outer space or abandoned under the buffet. And some of you may feel stranded in broad daylight, surrounded by people, feeling invisible, or worse yet, as visible and broken as a car wreck on the side of the road, strangers gathering to gawk at the shattered glass.

For many, the holidays can bring up discomfort. Read more

The Economics of Happiness

This article first appeared here.

I’ve always been intrigued by people who always happy. You know, no matter the circumstance in their lives - they are smiling on the inside and the outside.

Then there are those who allow chronic stress to permeate their lives as if they had no other choice but to suffer from needless tension and anxiety. I have counseled many such people and the majority are what I call “victims of life”. In other words they believe, deeply believe, that they have no choice BUT to have life dictate their unhappiness. Oscar Wilde summed this up best when he said, “Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go.”

You’ve no doubt heard it said that it takes seventeen muscles to smile and forty-three muscles to frown. That physical fact lays the foundation for the exploration of happiness economics. Read more

Best of Blog: Desiderata - Things to be Desired

Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender,
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
Even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter,
For always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
It is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs,
For the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
Many persons strive for high ideals,
And everywhere life is full of heroism. Read more

Best of Blog: Daring to be Yourself

Your every thought and word is contributing to your life experience. Your thoughts produce your emotions that, in turn, result in how you feel about a particular event occurring in your life. This is why two people can look at the exact same event and have opposite feelings about it. You are creating your own subjective reality, moment by moment, with the thoughts you choose to think and what you say, both to yourself and others. And through the power of Spirit your subjective reality impinges on the physical reality.

It isn’t so much a ‘magical’ process as a way of being that is quite foreign to most people. The average guy just does not realize that he can change his actions, feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and identity. Instead they are perceived as the result of influences upon him, so he feels molded and in effect, with few choices. Life just happens to him, and it’s all other people’s fault. The truth - that he is responsible for the quality of his life - is, in that context, a revelation. Because if he’s responsible, then he can change things around. Read more

The Best Use of Your Time is to Have Some Time

Sometimes things don’t work out or things fall through– because your dance card is already full. You just don’t know it’s full.

I’m someone who fills up her time, I confess. Blank space makes me nervous. Don’t get me wrong. I love freedom. I love the long country road it promises. But the urban me kicks in, bites her nails, and pushes for engagement. Productive me starts worrying and assigning minutes, worrying we won’t get things done, extract the most glory, make things count.

But sometimes I find the best use of my time– is to have some time. Read more
