Someone accurately pointed out that “habit starts out as a thread. As new threads are added, it becomes a rope we cannot break.” We want to be careful about the habits we make, for they eventually make us. But by making strong and productive habits, we build strong and productive lives.

Here is a list of habits, drawn on research from numerous sources, that peak performance people share. They are essential to master successfully if you intend to master a successful life. Yet one does not need to be a CEO or corporate head to benefit from the research. Anybody who works to develop these traits will experience almost instantaneous results. Read more

Do you ever think that one person really doesn’t matter? Tabitha Brown proved that one person does matter.

It was 1846. She joined one of the wagon trains of adventurers hoping to start a life in America’s west.

Grandma Brown, as she was affectionately called, was 62 years old, only five feet tall, and weighed all of 108 pounds when well fed. Because she was partly paralyzed, she leaned on a cane and walked with a limp.

Along the way, she showed great courage and stamina. As she crossed the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, she nursed the wagon train’s sick, though at one point, she neared starvation herself after the  caravan’s cattle were rustled off by Rogue River Indians. Read more

Do you find yourself pulling away from others, especially if you’ve experienced a crisis or deep disappointment? We need other people and we’ll never thrive as human beings in isolation.

A man who lost his wife to cancer found himself wanting to be alone. In time he dropped out of his worshipping community and curtailed all of the activities he and his wife had shared for so many years. He increasingly kept to himself. He quit socializing at work and returned straight home to an empty house. He turned down invitations from friends and co-workers. His leisure time was now spent watching television or working in his shop in the basement.

His contact with people dwindled until friends became alarmed that he might live out his life as a recluse. One came by to visit and to invite him over for supper the next evening. The two old friends sat in comfortable chairs by a warm fireplace. The visitor extended the invitation and encouraged him to allow others to share his pain. The man responded that he figured that he was better off without being around other people, who seemed to remind him of all he had lost. And besides, it was just too difficult to get out anymore. Have you ever heard of Hank Greenberg? The year was 1934. For the first time in 25 years, the Detroit Tigers  were a strong team who had an excellent chance to play in baseball’s prestigious World Series. Hank was a key player on a team that had come to rely on his superb skills at first base, and his strong batting, to win games. An important and decisive game was scheduled on Yom Kippur. Hank, the son of Romanian immigrants to the United States, announced that he would not don his uniform and play on this day, one of the most sacred of Hebrew fasts.

The city of Detroit was outraged. Citizens screamed that the Day of Atonement could be celebrated any year, but this year the Tigers may go all the way to the Series! Anti-Semitic remarks were viciously hurled, but Hank Greenberg remained resolute. Read more

A well-known surgeon was attending a dinner party and watched the host adroitly carve and slice the large turkey for his guests.

When he finished slicing, the host asked, “How did I do, Doc? I think I’d make a pretty good surgeon, don’t you?”

“Perhaps,” said the physician. “But anyone can take them apart. Now let’s see you put it back together again.” Read more

“It’s amazing to me,” one woman said, “how so many people all around the world have the same problems, no matter where they are from. It’s like we’re one big family!”

I wonder, if we are family, is there a family resemblance? Is it simply that we are human, or are there some identifying characteristics that mark us as belonging to each other?

An unusual thing happened to me a few years ago. I spoke casually with a woman who served tables at a restaurant I frequented. We knew each other by first name only, but usually spoke to for a few minutes each time I dined there. Read more

Two men fell on hard times. Try as they might, they couldn’t find work. They heard that a museum was willing to pay $50 apiece for live rattlesnakes so, in desperation, they decided to catch snakes.

Outfitted with a net and basket, they hiked to a remote area renowned for its large snake population. But as they scaled a steep ledge, the rock gave way and they tumbled down the slippery bank — into a deep pit crawling with angry, hissing rattlesnakes!

One of the men quickly sized up the situation and shouted excitedly to his friend, “Look! We’re rich! We’re rich!” Read more

Best of Steve Goodier: Lessons from the Court

Life lessons can come from unexpected places.

I have learned much about myself from the game of racquetball. In fact, I have learned a great deal over the years about all aspects life and living on the racquetball court. Here are some of the more important lessons that have come from the court:

1. People play better when they are encouraged. It’s true in life, too. People do better when they are encouraged, rather than criticized, condemned and judged.

2. When two or more people occupy a small space, they should learn to share. It goes for planets, too. Read more

Columnist Erma Bombeck once said, “It seems rather incongruous that in a society of super sophisticated communication, we often suffer from a shortage of listeners.” Perhaps that is because many of us suffer from what communicator Nido Qubein terms “agenda anxiety” — the feeling that what we want to say to others is more important than what they might want to say to us. Sometimes we try to impress rather than express, not realizing that two monologues do not make a dialogue.

Relationships work when communication works. And communication works when we listen as well as speak; when we relate from the heart as well as the head. Read more

Richard Hoefler, in his book WILL DAYLIGHT COME?, tells about two young children visiting their grandparents for the summer. Johnny was given his first slingshot. He practiced shooting in the woods, but missed everything he aimed at.

As he returned to Grandma’s back yard, however, he spied her pet duck. It wasn’t the only duck she kept, but it was her favorite. On an impulse he took aim and let it fly. This time he didn’t miss. His stone struck and killed the duck.

The boy panicked. He didn’t mean to hurt the bird — he was even sure he’d miss! But he had killed it. His panic grew to desperation and he hid the duck in the woodpile, only to look up and see his sister. Sally had seen it all, but she said nothing to her grandparents. Read more
